HALLOWEEN AND THE MOON IN IRELAND
Halloween 2026 will not feature a full moon. The moon phase on October 31st will be Waning Gibbous with 72.1% illumination.
While Halloween originated in Ireland from the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, a full moon on this night is actually quite rare. Full moons on Halloween occur approximately once every 19 years on average, with the last occurrence in 2020.
The Celts believed that Samhain was a time when the veil between worlds was thinnest, and while the moon won't be full this year, it still holds special significance in Irish folklore and tradition.
The moon will be waning on Halloween, moving away from the previous full moon.
SAMHAIN AND LUNAR TRADITIONS
Samhain, pronounced "sow-in," marked the Celtic new year and was traditionally celebrated from sunset on October 31st to sunset on November 1st. The moon played an important role in Celtic timekeeping, with months measured from full moon to full moon. Today, Halloween continues to be celebrated with particular enthusiasm in Ireland, honoring these ancient lunar and seasonal traditions.
